CHAPTER TWENTY

Owen thought he was dreaming, but if he was, it was vivid—different to the usual confused mess that went off in his head. Why would he let me go?

When Caryanne had walked into the cellar, Owen had thought that he was hallucinating until he’d felt her soft, warm hands and smelled the faint floral scent of the hand cream that she preferred. Then, he’d worried that she’d been captured as well.

Now, he was dirty and stinky but free. Although Pyra said they weren’t free, it sure felt like it after the hours or days or months in the dark. His eyes hadn’t fully adjusted to the brightness, which had resulted in a dull headache that made every movement painful. Not only that, but he was so weak that he could hardly walk.

It must have been adrenaline that enabled Owen to climb the steep steps from the cellar to the remarkably innocuous office. He let his head fall back against the cool headrest of the chair. Caryanne had gone off to tell the rest of the band to return to the apartment where they were staying with Treva. He vaguely remembered the boy from Red Ghost, although it felt like a lifetime ago.

Owen raised his head to look at Pyra who perched on the desk, staring at the door Caryanne had gone through a few minutes ago. “Why can’t we go together?”

Pyra frowned. “We don’t want to draw any more attention than necessary.”

The door swung open, causing Pyra to jump to his feet, but it was only Caryanne. She slipped inside, pressing her back to the wood as if her slight body could stop anyone entering.

Her eyes went straight to Owen. “I couldn’t tell them why because they would have charged in here so I told them that.”

Owen nodded, although the truth was, he was finding it difficult to follow what was happening. At least he was out of the cellar. He could cling to that fact.

Caryanne moved to Owen’s side as without a word, Pyra left. A minute later and he was back, hustling them out of a fire exit into a shuttle he must have arranged to meet them around the back. It was evident that Andrei Steyn could get anything he wanted and it appeared that Pyra had used that to his advantage.

Owen looked out of the window of the transport shuttle. They were on Glaendor where the band had played a couple of gigs what felt like a lifetime ago. The planet hadn’t made an impression on him the first time, and after his captivity, he would be happy to leave.

The shuttle stopped outside a tall building, surrounded by landscaped gardens. Owen had the feeling that if he were to walk in the grounds, they would disintegrate into dust.

Caryanne climbed out and waited to help as if he were a hundred years old. He gathered his energy and heaved himself onto the paved area at the building’s entrance.

Pyra had already paid for the shuttle ride, and now led the way into the chrome and glass building.
